The Desert Poppies is an informal networking group which provides a space for rural women to connect, network and be inspired.

Running since 2013, under the auspice of the CLMA,  the Desert Poppies hold annual events which range from craft activities, guest speakers, skills training and social events and attracts a network of over 100 central Australian women.

Here is what participants had to say about attending Desert Poppies events:

“It gives you something to look forward to. You don’t feel so isolated because you know you are going to catch up with everybody.”

"Attending Desert Poppies provides me with a ready-made network of pastoral women to link in with when in town and when I get home too."

“When you do live very rural you are a long way out of town. To come to town and to be able to lock in with everybody.. It’s really good.”

“Everybody here is just so welcoming. I think that just comes from being in that bush environment, everybody has that same background. And even though we aren’t all off stations, we all have that same interest.”

BACKGROUND

In 2013, Catherine Marriott came to Alice Springs and ran an Influential Women forum, sponsored by MLA, Women in Agriculture, Target 100 and the CLMA.  The forum went over two days and had 19 women mostly from the central Australian pastoral industry taking part. The forum was well received with ladies learning about social media, handling the media, and personality profiling to learn about themselves.

From this forum the networking group 'Desert Poppies' was founded and continues to enrich the lives of women in central Australia.
